      In a rare announcement, Saudi Arabia's Royal Court has disclosed that 88-year-old King Salman has been admitted to hospital for "routine check-ups." This unusual statement about the monarch's health raises questions and speculation about his true state of health. The examinations take place at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital, located in the coastal city of Jeddah on the shores of the Red Sea. According to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), these tests should last “a few hours”. However, the lack of transparency surrounding the exact nature of these reviews and the expected duration has raised concerns among the Saudi population and the international community. King Salman bin Abdul Aziz has ruled the kingdom since 2015, although his son, Mohammed bin Salman, has assumed day-to-day running of the country since his appointment as crown prince in 2017. Despite public appearances at official meetings, such as his recent participation in a Council of Ministers, information on his health remains limited. This hospitalization is not the first for King Salman. In May 2022, he had already been admitted to hospital for medical examinations, including a colonoscopy, and had spent a week recovering. In recent years, his infrequency in public appearances has fueled rumors about his state of health. In July 2020, he underwent gallbladder surgery, and in March 2022, he was hospitalized for "medical tests" and for his pacemaker battery to be replaced. Before his accession to the throne, King Salman served as governor of Riyadh for decades and also served as defense minister. His reign was marked by major social and economic reforms, aimed at diversifying the economy of Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter. These reforms were primarily driven by his son, Prince Mohammed, who also led a harsh campaign of repression to consolidate his own power.

Cette déclaration inhabituelle sur la santé du monarque soulève des interrogations et des spéculations quant à son état de santé réel.

     

    Les examens ont lieu à l’hôpital spécialisé King Faisal, situé dans la ville côtière de Jeddah, sur les rives de la mer Rouge. Selon l’agence de presse officielle saoudienne (SPA), ces tests devraient durer «quelques heures». Cependant, le manque de transparence entourant la nature exacte de ces examens et la durée prévue suscite des inquiétudes parmi la population saoudienne et la communauté internationale.

    Le roi Salmane Ben Abdel Aziz règne sur le royaume depuis 2015, bien que son fils, Mohammed ben Salmane, assume la gestion quotidienne du pays depuis sa nomination en tant que prince héritier en 2017. Malgré les apparences publiques lors de réunions officielles, telles que sa participation récente à un Conseil des ministres, les informations sur sa santé restent limitées.

    Cette hospitalisation n’est pas la première pour le roi Salmane. En mai 2022, il avait déjà été admis à l’hôpital pour des examens médicaux, incluant une coloscopie, et avait passé une semaine en convalescence. Ces dernières années, sa rareté dans les apparitions publiques a alimenté les rumeurs sur son état de santé. En juillet 2020, il avait subi une opération de la vésicule biliaire, et en mars 2022, il avait été hospitalisé pour des «tests médicaux» et pour le remplacement de la batterie de son stimulateur cardiaque.

    Avant son accession au trône, le roi Salmane a occupé le poste de gouverneur de Ryad pendant des décennies et a également été ministre de la Défense. Son règne a été marqué par des réformes sociales et économiques majeures, visant à diversifier l’économie de l’Arabie saoudite, le plus grand exportateur de pétrole au monde. Ces réformes ont été principalement impulsées par son fils, le prince Mohammed, qui a également dirigé une campagne de répression sévère pour consolider son propre pouvoir.
