EVOCATION GUELMA: May 1958 in Mermoura the humiliation of the French army History has taught us that the multiple actions of combat and struggle of the Algerian people against colonial oppression were in no way haphazard improvisations or utopian anticipations, and only became a striking reality thanks to the unshakeable faith backed by creative genius of its precursors, animated by a firm determination to believe in their just cause, to the point of not hesitating to go to the supreme sacrifice, with dignity, weapons in hand. 66 years later, dawn still returns to the mountains of Mermoura to light the memorial of remembrance which watches over the martyrs of this feat of arms, while preserving under its feet the wreck of the famous "alouette" type helicopter , the flying machine which crashed with the leader of the regiment of foreign paratroopers engaged in the battle. The sinister lieutenant-colonel Pierre Paul Jean Pierre never stopped boasting about his participation in the criminal tripartite aggression against Egypt in 1956, or his activities against the "fellagas" of Ouarsenis and that he would be on a "very special" in Guelma to put down the rebellion. This officer too talkative in front of his gallery of settlers, had however forgotten to mention his poor performance in the face of the final assault of May 7, 1954, led by a certain Vo Nguyen GIAP and the rout of the armies of Mariane in the basin of Dien Bien Phu. We revisit the history of our long march towards freedom through this feat of arms where the intelligence and spirit of initiative of the elements of a fighting unit of the ALN, made up of workers and peasants, emerging from the matrix of their sub-human condition, had routed the contingent of a regular army composed of the "heroes" of Suez-Port Said, the "professionals" of the Korean battalion, supported by colored berets , the foreign legion, armored vehicles, heavy artillery, combat helicopters, T6 fighters and NATO B26 bombers.
The context of the time was marked by the return of General Gaul after the collapse of the 4th republic. He had obtained absolute powers, setting himself the objective of "breaking the rebellion", by launching all his potential in a deluge of fire against the Algerian revolution, which defeated the tendentious enterprise of pacification and fraternization, while foiling its plans and its excessive martial strategy. The units of the ALN then had several free zones "snatched" from the ground, and this state of affairs greatly irritated the head of the military place in Guelma as well as his accomplice Colonel De Seize, head of the Korean battalion, stationed in Oued Zenati, jointly deciding to break the momentum of solidarity which mobilized the urban and rural populations around the ALN fighters, who swarmed the maquis and manifested themselves in armed guerrilla companies as intrepid as they were daring and reckless. On May 27 and 28, 1958, the operation called "bull 3" was refined by the best of the elite officers from the Saint-Cyr and Saint Mexant schools, involving more than 3,000 over-equipped men deployed in mode of combing on the mountains of Sersara, Debagh, Taya, Mermoura, Staiha and Beni Melloul, with a view to dislodging a handful of guerrillas, armed for the most part with individual light weapons, a bazooka and a machine gun, a modest loot from previous confrontations with the enemy. The fighting unit of the ALN had found itself surrounded and its elements had decided to adopt an intelligent defensive tactic, by positioning themselves on high ground to dominate the attacking forces, which were forced to go up the steep terrain in the open. The mobility of the shooters upstream gave the impression of numbers and the heavy fire constituted an effective moving barrier as deadly as it was impassable. This defensive strategy caused scathing setbacks to the colonial soldiery, putting their command in the obligation to resort to air cover and heavy artillery. Officer Jean Pierre was exacerbated to see his men in repeated withdrawals and incapable of progressing towards these heights which were spitting fire without respite. He then took the initiative to make them return to the charge by threatening them with his handgun, from his helicopter. The maneuver was observed by the mujahideen who had reacted instinctively with concentrated fire on the helicopter flying within their range and at low altitude. It was the revenge of the righteous. The helicopter hit began to spin before crashing to the ground, causing the death of the pilot and the first officer who directed the battle. Throughout the day, our fighters suffered intense shelling from artillery and bombardments from planes which did not hesitate to drop phosphorous and napalm.
The French soldiers had ambushed themselves in a triangular space, watching for its only escape route which risked being used under cover of night and darkness. During their attempt to free themselves from the deadly vice, Tahar Dahmoune, Khelifa Khatla, Mahmoud El Harrouchi and their other companions, fought the final battle by inflicting heavy losses on the enemy and thus gave an exemplary lesson in bravery before falling under numbers, weapons in hand. In May 1958, at Mermoura, the French army was deeply humiliated by a handful of men who had taken up arms to defend their noble cause. In Mermoura that day, men sacrificed themselves with dignity. Today, out of gratitude and without renunciation, we must defend their memory. We must stop and carefully measure the progress we have made. by our people on the plates of development and progress. We must also readjust our orbit towards a more prosperous future, without mortgaging the rights of rising generations, nor deviating from the direction of history, by avoiding vegetate in the mysteries of underdevelopment, dependence and in the midst of the uncertainties of perilous tomorrows. We must remain vigilant against all forms of oppression and unwelcome attempts at destabilization, fomented by the irreducible revengers of the fifth column of the Zionist International and its learned ingratitude in search of lost sheep to bewitch them with camel obscurantism and launch them into the unknown of the ignorant. The saving resolution would reside as much in the duty of memory so as the memory is revived, but also in highlighting the notion of work, counting on oneself through effort and sweat, compared to the commitment to self-sacrifice of our elders who went beyond effort and sweat to pay the tribute of blood. The respect of the Nation towards its martyrs is galvanized by the unshakeable faith to also preserve their universal humanist memorial significance which resides in the support of oppressed peoples. In this context, Algeria today leads its fight for loyalty to the oath by provoking a tsumani against the resolutions of the San Francisco conference in 1945 establishing a world order which tends to subjugate Humanity. The time has come for the awakening of peace-loving peoples , of freedom and justice which are organized to correct the harmful axioms of universal history and rebuild a more humane and more just world. The commemoration of the 66th anniversary of this feat of arms was marked by the popular presence responding to the duty of memory, where the new Algeria demonstrates the desire to continue to work for sustainable development in the regions of deep Algeria , by fundamentally instilling in people's minds the notion of being at the service of the Fatherland and the citizen. We are thus inaugurating a new era of moralization of public life and of highlighting our own capacities on the chessboard of good governance in order to ensure the improvement of the living conditions of the populations and project all the potential of the country towards the podiums of merit and at the forefront among the advanced nations.
